The Case for Desegregation
“The year is 1960. The place is New Orleans, LA, USA. And it is the first day of school—a customary passage of childhood so routine, it is ordinary. But in the preceding 6 years, familiar days like these were punctuated by moments so unusual, the nation took note. This was one of the unusual days. Unlike the black girls and boys in her neighbourhood, who also ventured to new classrooms, Ruby Bridges arrived flanked by white men wearing official-looking suits and badges. Her photo was taken for the newspaper. In it, she walks in the shadow of Federal Marshals, there to protect her 6-year-old body from the violent defenders of segregation.” - Dr. Rhea Boyd
